Embark DNA Test
“What kind of dog is that?” Ever wonder what breed your dog really is, or what their ancestry might be? Capitola Veterinary Hospital will now be offering the Embark DNA Tests for dogs! This test provides results for breed specifics, disease risk, ancestry, and traits to expect. Offered by Embark Veterinary, Inc. this test can query over 200,000 genetic markers genome-wide, giving their customers greater than 99.99% accuracy for most tests. In addition, each dog’s test results will be contributed to future genetic discovery. This DNA test is collected with a comprehensive test panel and a convenient cheek swab for DNA collection. The Embark team offers lifetime genetic counselling and support for our veterinarians and our clients alike!
Knowing everything you can know about your dog’s breed and ancestry can help our veterinarians develop the best care plan based on disease risk, and will give valuable insight into likely behaviors to expect. This will also give information about breed make-up and predictable adult size which will help make decisions regarding exercise and diet.
Capitola Veterinary Hospital is now offering these Embark DNA Tests to all patients who have had an exam with one of our veterinarians within the last 12 months and a current rabies vaccine. Each DNA test will be special ordered and should arrive 7 business days after ordering – so if you’d like to schedule an appointment, please allow this time frame for the test to arrive. The test kit, round trip test shipping, a technician appointment to obtain the DNA sample, and interpretation by one of our veterinarians is all included in the price of $249.00!

Introducing Revolution Plus, a new cover all prevention for cats! Revolution Plus provides all the same prevention as Revolution, plus prevention against ticks. To sum it up, Revolution Plus will protect cats, 8 weeks and older, against: Fleas, Ticks, Ear mites, Roundworms/Hookworms, and Heartworms. This once a month, topical prevention is available for pick up at our hospital, and on our online store: ourpetsrx.com/capitolaveterinaryhospital.
Ticks can carry several serious diseases including Lyme’s Disease, and are prevalent on the Central Coast year round. This is why we recommend flea, tick and heartworm prevention for all pets, indoor and out, all year long. Locally Owned Family Practice
Capitola Veterinary Hospital is a locally owned, family practice that care about its community. This hospital is one of only a handful of privately owned practices left in Santa Cruz County. Being a privately owned practice versus a corporate owned practice allows us to focus on what is most important: your pets. Since our doctor appointment times are longer than those offered at many other hospitals, our doctors are thorough and answer questions you have right in the exam room. Our doctors are able and willing to call or email pet owners personally, to ensure everyone is on the same page.
Since we are a smaller practice, you don’t have to worry about a crowded or noisy lobby for those pets that may be a little more sensitive. Our staff always takes the extra step to ensure excellent care and service is provided for you and your loved ones; may it be a personalized email from the doctor, a call to check in on your pet or a friendly reminder for your upcoming appointment. It’s our goal to make your visit as stress free as possible.
