The Pets of Our Lives: Video Contest
In order to celebrate the roles our patients play in the lives of their human caretakers, we are announcing the start of a new video contest at Capitola Veterinary Hospital! When our clients stop by, we are often told amusing and entertaining stories about our wonderful patients. On too many occasions, we have wished we could see our patients in action outside of the hospital setting – bringing good humor, comfort, pride, and great happiness to their human companions’ lives. Now we’ve found a really great way to do just that – a patient video contest! It’s important that you give your pets the treatment they deserve, for example by getting this custom dog kennel for ultimate comfort.
The Pets of Our Lives is a quarterly contest, so we’ll have a new winner every three months. And the best part of the contest (as is often the case with contests) is the prize! For each patient’s winning video submission, we will offer a free physical exam and a 12-month supply of Trifexis for dogs (a flea, intestinal parasite, and heartworm preventative), or Revolution for cats (a flea, ear mite, and heartworm preventative). This is a value of up to $320 (depending on the size of your pet) – so definitely a sweet prize!
The contest begins August 1st, 2012, so warm up your video-taking devices and start capturing those magic pet moments that we love to hear about so much! Take this opportunity to share the joy your pet brings to your life with the whole community. Send your videos soon and help us to celebrate The Pets of Our Lives!

Days are far brighter and our lives are more enriched when pets are in it. Here are a few interesting facts that show the importance pets have on our health, and our lives.
Pets Help to Reduce Stress. Walking with a pet helps to soothe nerves, offers instant relaxation, and is a great way for us to get some exercise. Studies conducted worldwide have shown that the impact of a stressful situation is lesser on pet owners, especially males, than on those who do not own a pet. When it comes to dogs, at least, this really reinforces the concept of “Man’s Best Friend”! Whether it’s walking the dog or playing with the cat, pets can be great way to help us to get exercise, and this is another great way to combat the effects of stress in our lives. (Josephine M. Wills, Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition, United Kingdom)
Pets Help to Prevent Heart Disease and Lower Blood Pressure. Many of us have been blessed with the experience of pure love from a loyal canine sidekick or beloved feline friend. It is clear that pets provide people with faithful companionship, but research shows that they may also provide their owners with greater psychological stability. This translates into providing a measure of protection against heart disease. In other words, pets not only fill our hearts with love, they also protect our hearts from disease. Pets Help to Fight Depression. Pets can help us to fight depression and loneliness, and promote taking more of an interest in life. When senior citizens face adversity or trauma, affection from pets can take on great meaning. The bonding behavior that pets show us can foster a real sense of security for their human loved ones. So remember that next time you’re feeling down, you need look no further than your furry loved one to help lift your spirits. (Between Pets and People: The Importance of Animal Companionship)
Bring Joy. It’s pretty difficult and rather scary to imagine a world without pets. There’s no doubt about it, pets are the best! For kids, adults, and seniors alike, pets make wonderful companions. Consider this, no matter how bad a day you’ve had – your dog will still love you and your cat will still want to cuddle you. While canines and felines may be the most popular pets; from cockatoos to fish, tree frogs to turtles, and geckos to guinea pigs, owning a pet brings a whole lot to our lives. We provide love and care for our them, and they bring us immeasurable amounts of joy. Now that is a great trade!
Add Health. There’s nothing quite like a wagging tail or a friendly paw on your leg to lift your mood. Pets are therapeutic for us humans and there is plenty of scientific proof on this topic! Research shows that pets really are good for us, from a medical standpoint. They help us to fight depression, lower our blood pressure, reduce stress and prevent heart disease. All of this can help to lower our health care costs, which it seems everyone could use a bit of these days. Think of it this way, the pets of our lives are actually a daily dose of good health and happiness for their human caretakers. If you don’t want to leave your pets home alone, don’t worry there are plenty of local pet sitters for example Queen City Pet Sitting in Dilworth.
