Winter Dental Special 2015-2016!

In honor of National Pet Dental Health Month, Capitola Veterinary Hospital is having a winter dental special, going on now through March 2016!  All patients with a current annual exam are eligible for this $109 discount on a comprehensive oral health assessment and treatment (COHAT) procedure.

Our dental procedures include:

  • Complete DIGITAL X-rays of every tooth.
  • IV catheter and Fluids
  • 3 member team for monitoring and treatment including 2 technicians and 1 doctor.
  • Ultrasonic scaling above and below the gum-line on every side of every tooth.
  • High speed polishing to leave a smooth plaque resistant tooth surface.
  • EKG, Pulse Oximetry, Temperature, Blood Pressure, and Apnea monitoring.
  • Fluoride treatment.
  • Extractions are performed, if needed, based on exam and X-rays.  All extractions are performed by a doctor (NEVER by a technician which is common in many veterinary hospitals) using sterile instruments.   Extraction sites are closed carefully with absorbable sutures to minimize discomfort.  Pain medications and follow up X-rays if needed are included in the costs of extractions.
  • Home dental care consultation regarding methods to prevent recurrence of dental disease.

Beware of “Anesthesia Free” dental procedures which are a poor value and can be dangerous for your pet. You can learn more about Anesthesia Free teeth cleaning problems from the American Veterinary Dental College’s position statement which can be viewed by clicking here: http://www.avdc.org/statements.html

Expanding Our Staff!

We have a few new additions to our CVH family!  We are very excited to welcome Brooke and Kellie as Client Service Representatives and Elena as a veterinary technician.

Brooke and Brando

Brooke and Brando

Brooke moved to Santa Cruz in 2012 and attended UC Santa Cruz where she graduated with a B.S. in Marine Biology. While in school, she started volunteering as a research assistant at the Pinniped Cognition and Sensory Systems Laboratory at Long Marine Lab. Still an active volunteer, here is where she began her passion for marine mammal research and her introduction to marine mammal training. Brooke is also a dog trainer with Karma Dog Training. Her favorite cases to work with are basic obedience, therapy dogs, and service dogs.

Now a member of the Capitola Veterinary Hospital team she hopes to broaden her knowledge of veterinary medicine.  Her goals are to become a marine mammal trainer at a facility contributing to the understanding of marine mammal physiology and conservation.  Brooke’s hobbies include scuba diving, enjoying the mountains in her hometown of Pinecrest, training animals, and being around her friends and family.

Kellie and Riley Roo

Kellie’s love for animals has been a driving force in her life. Her animal advocacy began at an early age when she would bring home abandoned cats for what she claimed would only be “one night.” One night often turned into forever, and thus a passion was fueled. Kellie brings over six years of combined experience working in a veterinary hospital as a kennel and veterinary assistant. Kellie also volunteers as a Youth Coach for UnChained, where she helps lead the Canines Teaching Compassion program at Juvenile Hall. She loves taking time to help shelter dogs become adoptable through behavioral training, and teaches at-risk youths the values of respect, empathy, and the power of second chances. Additionally, Kellie pursued a B.A. in Humanities at San Jose State University with the intention of becoming better equipped to make a greater impact on the work she is passionate about. Her free time is usually spent walking her dog (Riley Roo), running, reading, cooking, snuggling with her two cats (Rafi and Remi), and spending time with her boyfriend, great friends, and family.

Elena

Elena is from Sacramento and is very excited to be here in Santa Cruz County.  She has been a licensed RVT for 4 years and has been in the animal field for over 8 years.  She has a 9 year old German Shepherd named Bosco, and both are very excited to play on the beach!  She also has 2 miniature horses, Shania and Pawnee, that are absolutely adorable.  In her free time, she enjoys outdoor activities such as biking, camping, hiking, and hopefully soon, surfing!

New Vaccines

We are happy to announce that we now offer a canine rattlesnake and a feline 3 year rabies vaccine!  The rattlesnake vaccine begins as an initial series of 2 vaccines, 4 weeks apart and then boostered annually.  The new 3 year rabies vaccine for cats requires them to have previously received a rabies vaccine.  Therefore, kittens and adult cats who have never had a rabies vaccine before should be given an initial vaccine that is good for 1 year before switching to the 3 year vaccine.  For more information on these as well as other vaccines that we recommend, please contact us or visit the link below!
